Islam is the Relisgion of all Prophet of Allah ,starting with Adam and ending with Muhammad(pbup).In Arabic, Islam means submission.To believe on the heart and declare with the tongue."No one is God except Allah and Muhammad (pbuh)is the Messenger of Allah" is how one becomes Muslim.Unttering the Two Testifications(shahadatan)is required of the person who is not already a Muslim is a believer and a follower of Islam.
The First Testification (shahadatan),i.e;"No one is God except Allah"means nothing deserves to be worshipped except Allah.The Second Testification,i.e,"Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah"is believing that Muhammad (pbuh)was the last of prophets,that he was truthful in all he told about conveyed from Allah,(as were all the prophet before him),and that the Creator gave us prophets and messengers to guide us to worship Him correctly.A Muslim must believe in all the prophets and messengers.
The Two Testifications are the essentials of belief in Islam;they are the foundation of the faith.The analogy of constructing a building is useful in explaining the importance of this basic belief.There will be no building without a concrete foundation.Likewise,there will be no benefit and fruitful result in the Hereafter(Akhirah)without first having the correct belief.
This analogy illustrates the need to start from the beginning and to build upward and that one must always have the proper belif to remain in Islam.Muslims firmly believe that only one Creator exists,that His name is Allah, and that Muhammad (pbuh) is his prophet and messenger.Knowledge od and belief in this are the foundation od the faith, which unite all Muslims.The Muslim uses the sound mind as a guide, because the sound mind and faith go hand-in-hand.Moreover knowlege is essential, as it gives one strength and purpose.
