The Great Spirit, also called Wakan Tanka among the Sioux, the Creator or the Great Maker in English, and Gitchi Manitou in Algonquian, is a conception of a supreme being prevalent among some Native American and First Nations cultures. According to Lakotah activist Russell Means a better translation of Wakan Tanka is the Great Mystery.

In the beginning was only Tepeu and Gucumatz (Feathered Serpent). These two sat together and thought, and whatever they thought came into being. They thought Earth, and there it was. They thought mountains, and so there were. They thought trees, and sky, and animals etc, and each came into being. But none of these things could praise them, so they formed more advanced beings of clay. But these beings fell apart when they got wet, so they made beings out of wood, but they proved unsatisfactory and caused trouble on the earth. The gods sent a great flood to wipe out these beings, so that they could start over.

An Algonquin Legend

The god Michabo was hunting with his pack of trained wolves one day when he saw the strangest sight, the wolves entered a lake and disappeared. He followed them into the water to fetch them and as he did so, the entire world flooded.
Michabo then sent forth a raven to find some soil with which to make a new earth, but the bird returned unsuccessful in its quest.
Then Michabo sent an otter to do the same thing, but again to no avail.
Finally he sent the muskrat and she brought him back enough earth to begin the reconstruction of the world. The trees had lost their branches in the flood, so Michabo shot magic arrows at them that immediately became new branches covered with leaves.
Then Michabo married the muskrat and they became the parents of the human race.

Native American Indians celebrate a death in various ways; the dead are honored with food, herbs and gifts to ensure a safe journey to the after life.
For native American Indians, death was an end to life on earth but a start of life for the soul in the next world. There is a common belief amongst most native tribes that the soul enters the Spirit World; however, this journey may be long and complicated so after life rituals are performed to ensure that the spirits do not continue to roam the earth and trouble the living.
Hopi House of the Dead

Hopi Indians believe that the soul moves along a Sky path westwards; those that have lived a righteous life will travel with ease but those who haven't will encounter suffering on their journey. To ensure a safe journey for the spirits, the Hopi will wash their dead with natural yucca suds and dress them in traditional clothes.
Prayer feathers, ankwakwosis, are then tied around the forehead of the deceased, as a blessing, and they are then buried with favorite possessions and feathered prayer sticks. The living pray and grieve for the spirits to help them on their way; traditional foods and special herbs are served and placed at the grave side.
