SHAHADA

The testimony of faith will soon become the

source of your guidance, and it will be the cement that will unite your entire life with Allah and His Messenger. There is no God but Allah, nothing worthy of worship except Him, nothing nor nobody can give or take away except what He has already prescribed for you. Converting to Islam is usually followed by great trials, and tremendous stress and anxiety. It may affect your work and your studies, and it may distance you from life-long friends and family members. These trial are meant to bring you closer to Allah and to develop a love towards His Messenger (peace be upon him) as you strive to learn more and understand better the new and bright life you have chosen for yourself. Rely upon Allah to help you work through your trials and hardships as you put your best effort forward. Remember that the Prophet, Allah's peace and blessing be upon him, went through even harder trials than you will ever go through, and so studying his life should be second only in importance to learning and understanding the Quran. His life will balance yours, the beauty of his character will beautify yours, and insha'Allah every aspect of his life will inspire you to become a better human being.

The Meaning of La Ilaha illa Allah

The meaning of each word in the phrase is:

La: There is no; ilaha: god (diety); illa: except; Allah: Allah (God)

And therefore the literal meaning of this phrase is “There is no god (deity) except Allah”

First Part of this phrase: Rejection

‘There is no god (diety)’… Here, god with a small case ‘g’ is anything which is worshipped. Many people have taken things in creation as their gods and deities, but they are all false and are wrongfully worshipped, meaning that they have no right to that worship, nor do they deserve it. This rejection extends to all superstitions, ideologies, ways of life, or any authority figures who claim divine devotion.

Some people imagine the Divine Kingdom of God to be like earthly kingdoms. Just as a king has many ministers and trusted associates, they imagine ‘saints’ and minor deities to be our intercessors to God. They take them as agents through whom God is approached. In truth, there are no intercessors in Islam, nor any class of clergy to whom one must ‘confess’ their sins to be forgiven. A Muslim prays directly and exclusively to God. We also reject superstitious practices such as astrology, palm reading, good luck charms, and fortune-telling.

Second Part of this phrase: Affirmation

‘Except Allah’… After denying the right of any created being to be worshipped, the Testimony affirms divinity for Allah alone, with ‘…except Allah.’

Allah, in the Quran, mentions in many places that all things which people take as objects of worship besides Allah do not deserve any worship, nor do they have any right over it, as they themselves are creations and have no power to bring any benefit.

Yet they have taken besides Him other gods that created nothing but are themselves created, and possess neither hurt nor benefit for themselves, and possess no power (of causing) death, nor (of giving) life, nor of raising the dead. (Quran 25:3)

Thus, la ilaha illa Allah means, “There is no true god except Allah” or “There is no god rightfully worshipped except Allah.”

The Meaning of Muhammad rasoolu Allah

The meaning of each word in the phrase is:

Muhammad: Prophet Muhammad; rasoolu: Messenger; Allah: Allah (God)

And therefore this phrase means, “Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah”.

By testifying to this fact, one affirms that Prophet Muhammad (may God praise him) is in fact a Prophet and Messenger raised by God, amongst mankind to deliver the message of God, as were other Prophets and Messengers. Attesting to this fact implies a multitude of meanings. These include:

1. To believe that he was the last Prophet and Messenger.

“Muhammad is not the father of any man among you but he is the Messenger of Allah and the last of the Prophets and Allah is Ever All-Aware of everything” (Quran 33:40)

2. To believe that he delivered the message of Allah faithfully just as he received it without any deficiency. Allah says:

“…This day, I have perfected your religion for you, and completed My Favor upon you, and have chosen for you Islam as your religion…” (Quran 5:3)

3. To believe that he was a Prophet to all mankind. Allah says:

“Say: O humanity! I am Allah’s Messenger to you all…” (Quran 7:158)

4. To believe that everything he said about the religion was revealed from Allah. He is to be taken as an example and obeyed without reservation as he speaks in the Name of Allah and obeying him is obeying Allah.

“He does not speak from his own desire, it (his speech) is only a revelation inspired [to him]. (Quran 53:3-4)

“He who obeys the Messenger, obeys Allah...” (Quran 4:80)

5. We must worship Allah according to the law brought by him. He abolished all previous laws including the Mosaic Law.

“And whoever desires a religion other than Islam, it shall not be accepted from him, and in the Hereafter he shall be one of the losers.” (Quran 3:85)

6. Prophet Muhammad is to be loved and honoured. Knowing about his morals, his sacrifices for spreading monotheism, and patience with his opponents all increase one’s appreciation of him. The more we learn about his life and characteristics, the more we will increase in our love for him.

In summary, the testimony Muhammad rasoolu Allah means obeying Prophet Muhmmad in what he commands, believing him in what he informs, shunning what he has prohibited, and worshipping Allah alone the way he instructed us. These matters are not restricted to a certain people or to a specific time.

(Ablution (Wudoo

The Virtues of Ablution

By the ultimate grace of Allah, He commands us with certain obligations, and then also rewards us for their fulfillment. Performing ablution as well has many virtues associated with it, from forgiveness of sins to it being a mark of recognition on the Day of Judgment. The following are an example of some of the hadeeths which mention these rewards.

(1) Messenger of Allah, may Allah praise him, said:

“When a Muslim or a believer performs ablution and washes his face, every lesser sin that he committed as a result of looking washes away with water (or with the last drop of water). When he washes his hands, every sin that his hands committed washes away with water (or with the last drop of water). When he washes his feet, every sin to which he proceeded washes away with water (or with the last drop of water) until he emerges pure and sin free..” (Muslim)

(2) Messenger of Allah, may Allah praise him, said:

“Shall I inform you (of an act) by which Allah erases sins and raises degrees? They (his Companions) said, ‘Certainly, O Messenger of Allah.’ He said, ‘Perfecting the ablution under difficult circumstances, taking many steps to the mosque, and waiting for the (next) prayer after the (last) prayer has been performed. That is ribat[1].’” (Saheeh Muslim)

(3) Messenger of Allah, may Allah praise him, passed by a grave site and said:

“Peace be upon you, the abode of the believing people, and soon we as well, if Allah so wills, are about to join you. I love to see my brothers.”

They (his Companions) said: “Aren’t we your brothers, O Messenger of Allah?”

He said: “You are my Companions; our brothers are those who have not yet come into the world.”

They said: “O Messenger of Allah, how would you recognize those persons of your nation [on the Day of Judgment] who have not yet been born?”

He replied: “Suppose a man had horses with white blazes on their foreheads and legs among other horses which were all black. Tell me, would he not recognize his own horses?”

They said: “Certainly, O Messenger of Allah.”

He said: “They [those who have not come yet] will come with white faces, arms and legs owing to ablution, and I will arrive at the Cistern[2] before them. Some people will be driven away from my Cistern as a stray camel is driven away. I will call out: ‘Come, come.’ Then it will be said (to me): ‘These people changed [the religion by innovating in it] after you,’ and I will say: ‘Be off, be off.’ ” (Saheeh Muslim)

On the Day of Judgment, the Muslim nation will be distinguished from other nations by the body parts which they washed for ablution which will be emanating with light:

“My people will be called to presence on the Day of Judgment with bright faces, arms and legs from the traces of ablution.” (al-Bukhari)

The Method of Performing Ablution

Allah, the Exalted, says in the Quran:

“O you who believe! When you intend to offer the prayer, wash your faces and from your hands up to the elbows, wipe your heads, and wash your feet up to the ankles.” (Quran 5:6)

Prophet Muhammad also said:

“Allah does not accept any prayer performed without being in a state of purity.” (Muslim)

The Prophet practically taught us how to perform ablution, as he was sent to explain the revelation of the Quran. The following is a step by step guide explaining what exactly is to be washed and how, gathered from various texts of hadeeth.

(1) You must have the intention of purifying yourself from a state of ritual impurity[3]. This means that you should bring into your mind that you are performing this wudoo in order to enter a state of ritual purity. This intention is in the heart and is not to be uttered.

(2) Begin with the name of Allah, by saying ‘Bismillaah’.

(3) Then, wash your hands three times each. You should always start with the right whenever washing the body parts..

(4) Rinse your mouth three times, swirling the water around inside your mouth (gargling), and then rinse your nose three times by inhaling some water into your nostrils and blowing the water out. Use your left hand to remove the water from your nose.

(5) Wash your face three times, from the hairline to the jawbone and chin, and from ear to ear. A man should wet the hair of his beard because it is part of the face. If his beard is thin he has to wash it inside and out, and if it is thick and covers the skin, it is sufficient to wash the surface and run his wet fingers through it.

(6) Then you should wash your hands and arms up to the elbows three times, starting from the fingertips, including the nails, up to and including the elbows. It is essential to remove anything stuck to the hands before washing them, such as dough, mud, or paint, nail polish, and anything else that could prevent the water from reaching the skin.

(7) Then, with fresh water, wipe your head and ears one time, not the water left over from washing your arms. The way to wipe the head is by placing your wet hands at the front of your head and passing them over your hair/head until you reach the back of your head (the nape of your neck), then bringing them back to the place where you started. You may see some people wiping the backs of their necks as well. This is something which has found its way into the practice of Muslims from countries and should not be done, as the Prophet, may Allah praise him, did not teach us to do so. Then put your index fingers in your ears and wipe the back of the ears with your thumbs. With regard to long hair, whether loose or braided, one is not to wipe its entire length, but rather pass their hands from the front of the head to its back, as described above.

(8) Then you should wash your feet three times, from the tips of the toes up to and including the ankles.

(9) You must maintain the correct order in washing the body parts, and do so in succession, not taking a long pause between each body part. Those body parts which we mentioned to wash thrice may be washed twice or once only, but those which we mentioned to wipe once (the head and the ears) may only we wiped once and not more.

Men and women are to perform wudoo in the same manner. As most of you probably work, it’s a good idea to learn how to wipe over the socks to save you the trouble of taking off your socks at work. It basically involves wetting the hands and passing them over the tops of the socks (the foot part and not the leg). You can learn more about this here.

The evidence for the method of performing ablution is the hadeeth narrated of Ali:

“After praying the Fajr prayer, ‘Ali entered and sat in terrace, and then said to a young boy: ‘Bring me some water for ablution.’ The boy brought him a bowl of water and a basin. ‘Abd Khair said ‘We were sitting and watching him.’ He said: He held the vessel with his right hand and poured [water] into his left, and washed his hands up to the wrist. Then he [again] held the vessel with his right hand and poured [water] into his left, and washed his hands up to the wrist. He never put his hands inside the bowl until he washed both hands thrice.

Then he put his right hand in the bowl and rinsed his mouth and nose three times, expelling the water from his nose with the help of his left hand.

He washed his face thrice, his right hand to the elbow thrice, and then his left hand to the elbow thrice.

He then put his right hand into the bowl until it was immersed in the water, took it out and wiped his left hand with whatever water was on it, then he wiped his head with both hands once.

He poured water with his right hand over his right foot thrice, washing it with his left hand, and then poured water with his right hand over his left foot thrice, washing it with his left hand [as well].

Then he put his hand into the bowl, took some water up into his palm and drank it. He then said, ‘This is how the Prophet of Allah performed ablution. Whoever would like to see how he used to perform ablution, this is it.’ ” [Saheeh ibn Hibban]

Over time, you can learn these prayers which the Prophet, may God praise him, himself said and also encouraged us to say after completing ablution (wudoo’).

1. “Ash’hadu an laa ilaha ill-Allah, wahdahu laa shareeka lah, wa ash’hadu anna Muhammadan abduhu wa rasooluh.”

“I bear witness that none has the right to be worshipped except Allah, alone, without partner, and I bear witness that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger.”

2. “Allahummaj’alni min at-tawwabeena waj-alni min al-mutatahhireen.

“O Allah, make me of those who return to You often in repentance and make me of those who remain clean and pure.”

3. “Subhaanak Allahumma wa bihamdik, ash’hadu an laa ilaha illa ant, astaghfiruka wa atoobu ilaik.”

“How perfect You are O Allah, and I praise You, I bear witness that none has the right to be worshipped except You, I seek Your forgiveness and turn in repentance to You.’

Footnotes:
[1] Ribat is a term that normally denotes ‘guarding’ the borders of the Islamic nation from enemy attack, which has great reward in Islam.
[2] The Cistern, or ‘Hawd’ in Arabic: the reservoir from which the Prophet, may Allah praise him, will give his followers drink whiter than milk on the Day of Judgment, after which they will never feel thirst again.
[3] This is the state one enters after having urinated, defecated, etc..

The Five Pillars of İslam

The essential teachings of Islam are based on five principles, referred to as the ‘Five Pillars of Islam’, and six fundamental beliefs, known as the ‘Six Articles of Faith.’[1] This division is based on the following well known hadeeth of Prophet Muhammad. Umar, one of the closest of companions to the Prophet, related the following occurrence:

“Once, while we were sitting with the Prophet, a man appeared before us whose clothes were exceedingly white and hair exceedingly black. No signs of traveling were seen on him and no one among us knew him. He sat towards the Prophet, resting his knees against his knees and placing the palms of his hands on his thighs. He then said: ‘O Muhammad, tell me about Islam.’

The Messenger replied: ‘Islam is to testify that there is no god worthy of worship except Allah and Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, to perform the prayers, to pay the compulsory charity ( zakah), to fast in Ramadan, and to make the pilgrimage to the House if you are able to do so.’

He said: ‘You have spoken the truth.’

We were amazed at him asking questions and then saying he had spoken the truth!

He then inquired: ‘Tell me about faith (Iman)?’

The Prophet replied: ‘It is to believe in Allah, His angels, His scriptures, His messengers, and the Last Day, and to believe in divine decree, both its sweetness and its bitterness.’

He said: ‘You have spoken the truth.’

Umar then related some more questions he asked and the answers given by the Prophet. Finally, when the man left, the Prophet asked:

‘O ‘Umar, do you know who was the questioner?’

I said: ‘Allah and His Messenger know best.’

The Prophet said: ‘It was Gabriel who came to you to teach you your religion.’”[2]

The Meaning of ‘Islam’

The Arabic word ‘Islam’ means to submit, a total surrender, a total resignation to God. Therefore, a ‘Muslim’ is ‘one who submits to God.’ Islam means to submit to Allah alone, to worship and serve Allah alone, and to believe and follow the prophet sent to them. To many non-Muslims, ‘Islam’ is a religion that began in the seventh century in the Middle East, but to Muslims, Islam has always been the only religion of Allah since the time of Adam, the first man. Thus, Islam was the religion of all prophets who came after him. In the time of Moses, Islam was to worship Allah alone and believe and follow the teachings Moses had brought, and Islam in the time of Jesus was to worship Allah alone and believe and follow the teachings Jesus had brought, as they were both prophets sent by God to teach his religion. After the coming of Prophet Muhammad, Islam is to worship Allah alone and believe and follow the teachings of Prophet Muhammad. Although the teachings of all the prophets about God, the Afterlife, and all other realities of belief were the same, there were slight differences in the methods of practice, worship and service, for each prophet was sent to a specific nation and specific period of time. Even though previous religions come under the general heading of Islam, the religion of Muhammad has specifically been given the name ‘Islam’ by God, as it is the final religion prescribed for humanity until the Day of Judgment.

The Five Pillars of Islam

Allah has mandated five acts upon which the whole religion of Islam is built. Due to their importance, the Prophet stated in another hadeeth:

“Islam has been built upon five…”

[COLOR="rgb(105, 105, 105)"]
An introduction page with dua' from Surah Ibrahim and a house reminding the hadeeth:
“Islam has been built upon five things – on testifying that there is no god save Allah, and that Muhammad is His Messenger; on performing salah; on giving the zakah; on Hajj to the House; and on fasting during Ramadhan.”

Some Common Questions by Recent Converts

(1) I have recently accepted Islam, do I need to change my name?

No, you don’t have to change your name unless its meaning is Islamically objectionable. The Prophet did not order everyone who accepted Islam to change their names. Since Arabic names generally have meanings, he did change names with offensive or religiously objectionable meanings. And if the name is not Islamically objectionable, then it is recommended to take a Muslim name but one does not have to.

Even if your first name does contradict Islamic principles and changing it in official documents would cause you much distress or harm, then it suffices to change it amongst family and acquaintances

If you do change your name, do not change the family name or your father’s name, even if it be an impermissible name, but just your first name. Allah says in the Quran:

“Call them (adopted sons) by (the names of) their fathers, that is more just with Allah.” (Quran 33:5)

(2) I am uncircumcised male who just accepted Islam. Do I have to get circumcised?

Yes it is mandatory to get circumcised after you accept Islam. However, if you cannot afford to get it done, or fear that it will harm you, then you can forgo or delay doing it. If you decide to go ahead with this meritorious act of worship, you need not go to extremes in hurrying to get it done. Make sure you find a good surgeon competent in circumcision before taking the step. The skin lesion takes about a week to completely heal. One of the benefits of having it done is that it makes it easier to clean yourself, and maintain cleanliness, after passing urine or emitting semen, both of which your clothes and skin should be free from during prayer.

(3) Do I have to say the testimony of faith (shahadah) in front of people?

No. You do not have to utter the two testimonies:

Laa ilaaha ill-Allah, Muhammad-ur-Rasool-ullah,

…in front of people to be considered a Muslim in the sight of God. You can say it to yourself.

What is important is that:

(i) you know the meaning of the testimony of faith

(ii) you actually utter the two testimonies verbally

(iii) your heart confirms it, you truly believe it, and intend to live by it to your best ability

The Messenger of God said:

“I testify that there is no god worthy of worship except Allah and that I am the Messenger of Allah. Every servant who meets Allah without doubting it will be admitted to Paradise.” (Saheeh Muslim)

He also said,

“No one says 'La ilaha illa Allah' truthfully from their heart and dies upon it, but they will be protected from the Hell-Fire (i.e. they will be admitted into Paradise)." (Saheeh al-Bukhari )

At the same time, it is perfectly fine, and to your advantage, to pronounce it publicly, like in a mosque, so people know you are a Muslim. In some countries one has to be registered as a Muslim, so, in the case of death, the person is given a Muslim burial. Also, it is good to get a letter at some point from your local Islamic center stating you are a Muslim. It may be useful when applying to go for the Hajj pilgrimage, or officially declaring a marriage in a Muslim country.

(4) Why is it necessary to say the two testimonies verbally?

A testimony is literally something which is given verbally and announced, not kept in the heart. Thus the testimony of faith must be announced, and the Prophet himself would tell one who wished to accept Islam to pronounce it. Furthermore, it should be said in Arabic, as this statement is a specific prayer which is pronounced in Arabic.

(5) What are the common Islamic greetings I should know for social occasions?

The most important ones are two. When you meet a fellow Muslim, the one initiating the greeting says, ‘As-Salamu ‘Alai-kum.’ The other responds, ‘Wa ‘Alai-kum us-salam.’ Men shake hands with men and women shake hands with women. Men who are not mahram[1] to women should not shake their hands.

Also, a Muslim says, ‘Alhamdulillah,’ (All praise and thanks belong to Allah) on sneezing, and upon receiving good news or stating a pleasant state of affairs.

If one states that they will do something in the future, they should say, “In shaa-Allah (God-willing).

Also, if one praises something or someone, they should say, “Baarak-Allahu feeh (may Allah bless it), or Barak-Allahu feek (may Allah bless you),” respectively.

All these sayings have been taught by the Prophet of Islam.

(6) I have recently accepted Islam. I felt euphoric at the time, but sometimes I wonder if Islam is bringing me closer to God?

Without a doubt Islam brings a person closer to his Creator. God loves and wants you to be a Muslim. Rest assured of that. Islam links the human being to his true Lord through the belief in the oneness of God and through various acts of worship. The more one worships Allah, the more he draws near to Him. One will never be able to draw near to Allah except by first performing the obligatory deeds, as the Prophet, may God praise him, said:

“God Almighty said, 'I have declared war on whoever shows enmity to a beloved slave of mine. My slave does not draw near to Me with anything I love more than by performing what I have obligated upon him, and he continues to draw near to Me with voluntary actions of worship until I love him. When I love him, I become his hearing with which he hears, his seeing with which he sees, his hand with which he strikes, and his foot with which he walks. If he were to ask Me for something, I would give it to him. If he were to ask Me for refuge, I would give him refuge. (Saheeh Muslim) ” [This Prophetic narration is not to be taken literally, rather what is meant is that the person will act according to that which pleases God. For example, he will not look at impermissible things, will only listen to that which is useful and beneficial such as listening to the Quran, Islamic lectures, etc.]

Stick the course. Be patient. Allow yourself time to grow as a Muslim. Learning is important and so is making good Muslim friends.

(7) I am new to Islam but I don’t know any Muslims, and I am scared to approach a mosque, is there anyone available to help me?

You are welcome to go through the e-learning content of our website. You can also contact us via the support page and we will be happy to put you in contact with fellow Muslims close to you. We pray to God to bless you, and to make you steadfast in holding fast to the truth. God is the One who guides to the path of truth and light.

(8) Someone told me that Muslims cannot have any relationship with non-Muslims, is this true? All my family are non-Muslims and I don’t want to cut ties with my family.

Beware of false information. What you were told is incorrect. Islam encourages us to be kind and generous to our relatives whether they are Muslim or not. Especially, one’s parents have great rights over us. You will find lessons where you will learn more about this.

(9) I heard that it is obligatory to attend the Jumu’ah Friday Prayer. What happens if my employer doesn’t give me the time off to attend?

You do not have to necessarily tell your employer you attend Jumu’ah prayer. The Jumu’ah Prayer lasts about 45 min -1 hr, so you can use your lunch break. If need be, arrange to take a slightly longer lunch break and make up for the time. In any case, you have the right to ask your employer for time off for Jumu’ah Prayer on Friday. Breaking the News to Family (part 1 of 2)
One of the tasks which is often most challenging for newcomers to Islam is breaking the news of their new faith to friends and family. Although one many be overjoyed in embarking on their new quest, starting a new, enriched spiritual life, they may find this task extremely difficult, fearing negative results and rejections from loved ones. One must be sure that they undertake this task with utmost care, as not doing so may damage cherished relationships, and one may not gain anything but hurt feelings.

This lesson contains some practical advice and some reminders that will perhaps allay your anxiety and help you deal with your loved ones with confidence.

First, congratulations for accepting Islam. It is the right decision and you should rest assured of that. Also, the fact that you have been guided to Islam is a proof that God loves you and will provide you the help you long for, for the Prophet, may God praise him said:

“For whoever Allah desires good, He gives them understanding of the religion.”(al-Bukhari)

Second, read the following set of advice and apply from them what is relevant to your personal situation.

Assess the Situation

Sometimes a new Muslim may feel that they want to let everyone know that they have accepted Islam, starting from their family. Some may feel that they are able to cope with any type of response, while others feel that their family will not mind, and may be even encourage the decision they took. The reality may be much different. Although some family members may not be religious, the fact that their loved one has chosen a path other than theirs, or simply because they fear for them due to all the bad impressions they have about Islam, they may react other than expected. This may be detrimental to a person’s progress after accepting Islam, and thus, one should think coolly and slowly and assess the situation well. After accepting Islam, one should concentrate on learning the basics of belief and worship and publicizing one’s conversion too soon, may make this very hard. Instead of the first stage being one filled with joy and inspiration, it may become one filled with argumentation and ill-feelings.

Announcing one’s acceptance of Islam is not a condition for being a Muslim, and if one feels that they would prefer to delay doing this until they are stronger in faith and knowledge or until they are independent, then this is fine. On the other hand, if one feels that their family will be accepting of their new faith then it is better to announce it as this will make it easier for them to practice the teachings of Islam.

And example of this is the great Companion of the Prophet, may Allah praise him, Muawiyah b. Abi Sufyan, who became Muslim and hid his conversion from his parents. His parents were very bold against Islam, and after thinking it out, and understanding the consequences of what his actions may lead to, he decided not to announce and publicly declare that he had become Muslim; instead, he chose to delay and announce his Islam at the right moment. This moment came when the Prophet, may Allah praise him, conquered Mecca. Muawiyah and his father along with others went to meet the Prophet, may Allah praise him, and declared their Islam before him.

When you do decide to announce it, keep the following guidelines in mind.

Seek Help in Patience and Prayer

Do not panic. Seek Allah's help through prayer and contemplation. Let Him guide you through these moments. You have two ‘gifts’ from God: patience and prayer to give you strength. Allah says:

“And seek help in patience and prayer…” (Quran 2:45)

Any hardship you may face is only a test through which you will increase in faith and trust in Allah. You will learn to rely upon and seek aid from Him. Whatever the result, know that in the end, it will be good for you. How beautiful is the saying of the Prophet:

“How amazing is the affair of the believer! All his affairs are good, and this [merit] is for none other than the believer. If something good happens to him, he thanks and praises God, and that is good for him. If he is afflicted with some hardship, he is patient, and that is good for him.” (Muslim)

Ask Allah to ease your affairs and give you strength. Ask Him to make your parents accept your news comfortably. Ask Him to keep you firm upon the religion. Ask Him to make you a means of guidance for them. The following are some special prayers prescribed by the Prophet with which you may supplicate to strengthen yourself and religion.

Prayer 1

“O Allah, it is Your mercy that I hope for, so do not leave me in charge of my affairs even for a blink of an eye and rectify for me all of my affairs. None has the right to be worshipped except You.” (Abu Dawood)

Prayer 2

“None has the right to be worshipped except Allah, the All-Knowing, the Forbearing. None has the right to be worshipped except Allah, Lord of the magnificent throne. None has the right to be worshipped except Allah, Lord of the heavens, Lord of the Earth and Lord of the noble throne.” (al-Bukhari)

Prayer 3

The Prophet told us:

“The hearts of the children of Adam are as one between the fingers of the Most Merciful, and He directs them as He wills.” (Ahmed)

Pray with the frequent supplication of Messenger of Allah:

“O Changer of the hearts, make my heart firm upon Your religion.” (Al-Tirmidhi)

Prayer 4

If you doubt your faith at any point:

· Seek refuge in Allah.

· Remind yourself you are on the religion of Jesus, Moses, and the rest of the prophets by saying, ‘I have believed in Allah and His Messengers.’[1]

Self-Assurance

Do not fear disapproval from loved ones or strangers. Some people suffer severe demoralization when criticized; others manage to gain new strength out of it. Islam brings a new demeanor, a new social life with renewed confidence, self-assurance, and social comfort. Islam indeed has the ability to alter personality for the good. As soon as faith enters the depths of your heart, you will realize that the whole world cannot be equal to living for one moment with this great blessing of Islam. Be forgiving and patient!

Talk to Someone You Trust

Talk to a Muslim friend you trust, preferably someone who has knowledge and wisdom. Find a good friend in whose life you will see the best of Islam in practice. The support of a loving friend will go a long way. Remember, heart heals the heart! Do not let your emotions build-up. Talk about it; there is no substitute for human love and caring.

Ways to Inform Loved Ones

All parents are not equal. Some are close to their children, others are distant. Dysfunctional families are also quite common. Some parents are supportive of whatever religion or lifestyle their child chooses, and others may vehemently oppose. In any case, it may be a good idea to let them know first that you have been reading about Islam, perhaps sharing some of what you learn with them before breaking the news, as that may come as a big shock. Take things gradually. In the end, it’s your call, as you know best the nature of your family. Most importantly, study the situation well before making any move, and don’t make and hasty decisions.

As mentioned earlier, if the situation calls for it, you may choose not to inform them of your decision for the time being. If you live with your parents, you can pray when they do not see you. You can tell them if you feel they will be supportive.

If you live on your own, this may be much easier. You can meet your parents face to face, give them a call, send an email, or write a letter. The best way, generally speaking, is face to face, as other means of communications may lead one to misunderstand the other party. If you are concerned for the social awkwardness that may result from embracing a religion different from theirs and feel intimidated talking to them about your religion, you may consider it a better option to write a general letter first. It will allow you to put your thoughts together, give them time to recuperate, and perhaps save both of you an embarrassing encounter.

Either way, you will have to meet them face to face at some point, and this will be the discussion of the following article.

Breaking the News to family (part 2 of 2)
Rights of Parents

First, it’s a good idea to know the rights of your parents in Islam, as even non-Muslim parents have great rights over you. Allah says:

“And We have enjoined on man to be dutiful and kind to his parents” (Quran 46:15)

Why are parents important?

Being kind to parents in Islam is regarded as obedience to Allah and His Messenger, and thus will be rewarded for in the Hereafter. Respecting and obeying them is a way of showing gratitude to them for the sacrifices they made and the care they took in rearing you. Respecting and honoring them develops friendship and love, which is extremely important now more than ever, as they may feel you have rejected them in your new lifestyle. Remember that obeying and honoring your parents is a means of entering Paradise, and treating your parents well will be a cause for your own children to treat you well, God willing.

How can you be kind to them? Obey them, respect them, lower your voice around them, smile, be humble, do not show your displeasure towards them, serve them, fulfill their wishes, consult them, listen to what they say, and do not be stubborn towards them. Also, visit them, spend time with them, offer them gifts, thank them for rearing you and treating you kindly when you were small. Above all, pray for their guidance.

There, are, however limits to obeying them. Allah says:

“But if they (both) strive with you to make you join in worship with Me others that of which you have no knowledge, then obey them not; but behave with them in the world kindly” (Quran 31:14-15)

Parents are not to be obeyed if they ask you to disobey Allah or His Messenger and violate Islamic teachings. If you are faced with a situation in which you may become involved with something not permissible in Islam, try to get around the situation. If they serve ham for dinner, try to tell them you don’t feel like eating or something of the sort. In all cases, try as much as possible not to offend them.

When you feel the time is right and you wish to begin a dialogue with your parents about your acceptance of Islam, find things to thank them for, especially memories from the past. Tell them what a terrible child you must have been, and how bad you feel for having been such a bother to them. Clearly explain to them why you chose Islam. Let them know your relationship with them is intact.

Be careful not to get into a religious debate of ‘my religion vs. your religion’ with parents or anyone. If they ‘judge’ or insult you, or express ‘anti-Islamic’ sentiments, reject being embarrassed or feeling humiliated for your decision to be a Muslim. Remember the ‘gift’ of patience and let it go. Gain strength from the prayers mentioned above.

If they express their apprehension or fears, address them based on what you know of Islam thus far. Excuse yourself if they ask questions you do not have answers to. Realize you are still learning your religion. Do not try to ‘convert’ them or prove you are right and they are wrong. Try as much as possible to dispel any fears they may have about Islam or your acceptance. It is good to wind up any conversation by letting them know you love them and will pray for them. Some good gifts will also be an incentive for them to listen and an example of Muslim generosity, either of which might induce them to contemplate conversion themselves. Treating them in the best manner will make them feel as you are the best of their acquaintances, and that you sincerely mean well and desire good for them.

Remember change comes gradually. Few remain unaffected over time, and most will recover their relationship with you from the strain your conversion caused. Some, by divine guidance, will join you. Your relationship will evolve with time. It’s up to you. Actions ‘speak’ louder than words. Let them see optimism, persistence, and cheerful warmth in your relationship with them. Here is a beautiful story of one of Prophet Muhammad’s Companions. Abu Hurayrah said:

“I used to invite my mother to Islam, when she was still a polytheist. One day I called her to Islam and she said something about the Messenger of Allah that upset me. I came to the Messenger of Allah, weeping, and said: ‘O Messenger of Allah, I was calling my mother to Islam and she refused. Today I called her and she said something about you that upset me. Pray to Allah to guide the mother of Abu Hurayrah.’ So the Messenger of Allah said: “O Allah, guide the mother of Abu Hurayrah.”

I left, feeling hopeful because of the Prophet’s prayer. When I got home, as I came near to the door I saw it was open. My mother heard my footsteps and said, ‘Stay where you are, Abu Hurayrah!’ I could hear the sound of water. She washed herself, got dressed and put on her head cover. Then she opened the door and said, ‘O Abu Hurayrah, I bear witness that there is no god worthy of worship except Allah, and I bear witness that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger.’

I went back to the Messenger of Allah, weeping with joy, and said, ‘O Messenger of Allah, good news! Allah has answered your prayer and has guided the mother of Abu Hurayrah.’ He praised and thanked Allah, and said, ‘That is good.’ I said, ‘O Messenger of Allah, pray to Allah to make my mother and me dear to His believing slaves, and to make them dear to us.’ The Messenger of Allah said, ‘O Allah, make this slave of Yours and his mother dear to Your believing slaves, and make the believers dear to them.’ There is no believer who hears of me or sees me, but he loves me.” (Saheeh Al-Bukhari)

Various Hadeeth

I will end with some beautiful Prophetic narrations which will give you the courage to be spiritually brave in face of real life challenges.

The Prophet used Paradise to encourage his Companions to stand firm. The Messenger of Allah passed by Yaasir, his wife and ‘Ammar, her son, when they were being tortured by the pagans of Mecca and said:

“Patience, family of Yaasir, patience, family of Yaasir, for your destination is Paradise.” (al-Hakim)

The Messenger of Allah, may God praise him, said:

“This world in comparison with the Next World is like putting your finger in the sea and seeing what comes back on it.” (Saheeh Muslim)

The Prophet used to say:

“O Allah, there is no life but the life of the Next World.” (Saheeh Al-Bukhari, Saheeh Muslim)

The Messenger of Allah said:

“One among the people of the Fire who was wealthiest person in this world will be brought on the Day of the Judgment, dipped once into it and then asked, ‘Son of Adam! Did anything good ever happen to you? Did you ever experience any blessing?’ He will say, ‘By Allah, no, my Lord.’ Another one among the people of the Garden who was the most miserable person in this world will be brought and dipped once into it (Paradise) and then asked, ‘Son of Adam! Did you ever experience any misery? Did you ever undergo any hardship?’ He will say, ‘By Allah, no. I never experienced any misery and I never underwent any hardship.’” (Saheeh Muslim
