Wife of the Father
The seventh century Church Father, Saint John of Damascus seems to be the first to write of Mary as spouse of God the Father. In his treatise on the Assumption, he states that, "It was fitting that the spouse whom the Father had taken to himself, should live in the divine Mansions"5. Some medieval writers, such as Rupert of Deutz and Ubertino of Casale continued to use this image, as did Saint Lawrence of Brindisi 6. Mary's "espousal" to the First Person of the Trinity became a popular area of discussion in the Ecole Francaise, a seventeenth-century French school of theology/mariology 7. Jean-Jacques Olier, a member of this school, seems to have written on this topic more than any other writer 8. Here are some samples of his (somewhat exaggerated) views on this subject: God the Father, as a holy and faithful husband, wants to unite the most holy Virgin to himself and give her the perfect possession of his Person, his treasures, his glory and all his goods" 9. For God the Father...wills that, in the mystery of the Incarnation, Mary should be his true and unique spouse, since he has destined her to be, with himself, the principle in the temporal generation of the Word, to do with him, in the Incarnation, what he does alone in eternity" 10.
(The Father) conceives for her all the affection of a spouse" 11

Spouse of the Holy Spirit

This title has caught on more strongly than the first two. It is a well-established part of the common series of Marian titles Daughter of God the Father, Mother of God the Son, Spouse of God the Holy Spirit
The Christian poet Prudentius (348-c.405) first used this image in relation to the Annunciation: "The unwed Virgin espoused the Spirit" 21.The list of Christians who called Mary the Spouse of the Spirit is impressive: Saints Anselm of Canterbury, Francis of Assisi, Bonaventure, Lawrence of Brindisi, Louis Marie de Montfort and Maximilian Kolbe, to name a few. Various modern popes have used or alluded to it, including Leo XII, Pius XII and Paul VI.
In his encyclical Marialis Cultus, Pope Paul VI wrote that early Christians coined the title Spouse of the Holy Spirit because they saw in the relationship between Mary and the Spirit "an aspect redolent of marriage" 22. Exactly what is that "aspect"?
Some may point to the fact that Mary conceived Jesus by the power of the Spirit as indicating a "marital" relationship. Yet we must not take this too far, for it could lead to the belief that the Holy Spirit is the "father" of Jesus in the Incarnation. Though Mary did conceive Jesus by the power of the Spirit, the latter did not play a parental role in the conception. A parent contributes his or her own substance to the child. Thus the First Divine Person is Christ's Eternal Father Who generates the Word from His own nature, and Mary is truly His earthly Mother who gave Him His Humanity. But the Spirit contributes nothing to Jesus at His conception, and so is in no sense His Father 23

Spouse of the Holy Spirit

The picture shows Mary standing upon a globe, which represents the world. Above is the Blessed Trinity. Directly over her head hovers the Holy Spirit in the form of a dove. Graces, represented by rays of light, stream from Him into Mary's heart, and from thence pour themselves upon the earth in seven streams, symbolizing the seven Gifts of the Holy Spirit granted to men through Mary's mediation. In several passages of Holy Scripture, the Holy Spirit Himself calls Mary His Spouse

Let's look at a few quotes from Rome herself. Pope Leo XIII, in his Encycl. Divinum illud, May 9,1897 stated: "...Unite, then, Venerable Brethren, your prayers with Ours, and at your exhortation let all Christian peoples add their prayers also, invoking the powerful and ever-acceptable intercession of the Blessed Virgin. You know well the intimate and wonderful relations existing between her and the Holy Spirit, so that SHE IS JUSTLY CALLED HIS SPOUSE. Her intercession was of great avail both in the mystery of the Incarnation and in the coming of the Holy Spirit upon the Apostles...." (Papal Teachings: Our Lady, Selected and arranged by The Benedictine Monks of Solesmes, Imprimatur: His Eminence, Richard Cardinal Cushing, Archbishop of Boston, May 31, 1961, 150.

Pope Pius XII, in an address to the women of Italian Catholic Action, July 13, 1958 said :
"There is a Woman, --you know it, -- upon whom God willed to fix His eyes with infinite tenderness, as He had destined her to be His Mother. His all-powerful love kept her virginal glory intact, and in addition HE BESTOWED ON HER THE CROWN OF A SPOUSE AND THE DIGNITY OF A MOTHER. Look on Mary as your model, unsurpassed and unsurpassable. Look on Mary, the Lily of the Valley, who, nevertheless, through the operation of the Holy Spirit bore fruit and gave Jesus to the world. If you look on her and imitate her, your freshness shall remain unblemished; your perfume unaltered; and your attractiveness unchangeable." (Ibid. 458 )

Pope Pius XII also taught: "And Paradise recognized that she [Mary] WAS REALLY WORTHY OF RECEIVING HONOR, GLORY AND RULE, because she is full of grace, holier, more beautiful, more exalted, incomparably more so than the greatest saints and angels, taken individually or all together; because, as the FIRST-BORN DAUGHTER of the Father, the PERFECT MOTHER of the Word, the BELOVED SPOUSE OF THE HOLY SPIRIT, she is related in virtue of the Hypostatic Union to the whole Most Holy Trinity...." (Ibid. 267-268 )

Pope Pius XII did think that Mary was "firstborn daughter of the Father", but Leo VIII went so far in his Encyclical Augustissimو (Sept.12, 1897) to say of Mary: "God chose her from all eternity to be the Mother of the Incarnate Word, and for that reason so eminently disguised her among all His most beautiful works in the triple order of nature, grace and glory, that the Church justly applies to her these words: - 'I came out of the Mouth of the Most High, the FIRSTBORN BEFORE ALL CREATURES" (Papal Teachings: Our Lady, 151).

Venerable Brethren and Beloved Sons and Daughters: Blessed be the Lord God, Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, Father of mercies and God of all consolation, who comforts us in all our tribulation. Blessed also, she whom He appointed Mother of Mercy, our Queen and our beloved Advocate, Mediatrix of all graces, and dispenser of all His treasures.

... the glorious Virgin, triumphantly entering the heavenly homeland, through the nine choirs of angels, was raised even to the throne of the most Holy Trinity, who placed upon her brow the triple diadem of glory. There she was presented to the court of heaven, seated at the right hand of the Immortal King of Ages and crowned Queen of the Universe.

And the King saw that she was truly worthy of such honour, glory and empire, because she was more filled with grace, more holy, more beautiful, nearer to the divine, incomparably more so, than the greatest saints and sublimest angels, separately or together. This because she is mysteriously related in the order of the hypostatic union with the Blessed Trinity, with Him who is in essence the Infinite Majesty, King of Kings and Lord of Lords.
...
Because she is associated as Mother and Helper of the King of Martyrs in the ineffable work of human redemption, she is also, forever, most powerfully associated in the distribution of grace and divine redemption. Jesus is King of the eternal ages by nature and by conquest. By Him, with Him, and under Him, Mary is Queen by grace, by her divine relationship, by conquest and by singular election. And her kingdom is vast, vast as that of her divine Son, because from her dominion none is excluded.

وهذا بعض مِن الأباء الذين قالوا بهذه العلاقة الزوجيه على مر العصور

اقتباس:

If we go back to the earliest writings of the Church, and quickly examine some sources, we see the “marital and spousal” aspect of this mystical language used in a second century AD document called the Odes of Solomon; and as we proceed up through history we see mention of it in the writings of St. Augustine (4th century), St. Ildephonsus, archbishop of Toledo, Spain (7th century), St. Germanus, patriarch of Constantinople (7th century), Cardinal St. Peter Damian (11th century), St. Bonaventure (13th century), Emmanuel d’Alzon (19th century), and, in the many scholars of the 20th century, such as Cardinal Joseph Suenens, Karl Rahner, Pope John Paul 2, Rev. Peter Damian M. Fehlner, F.F.I., and Pope Benedict 16th.

A few examples of how the word “spouse” is used in these theological contexts may be helpful. In 1979, on Pope John Paul 2 first pilgrimage to the United States, he gave a sermon on our Blessed Mother at the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception and made this point in relation to Mary:
“…Through her, the Sun of Justice was to rise in the world. Through her, the great healer of humanity, the reconciler of hearts and consciences, her Son, the God-Man, Jesus Christ, was to transform the human condition and by his death and resurrection, uplift the entire human family. As a great sign that appeared in the heavens, in the fullness of time, this woman dominates all history as the Virgin Mother of the Son, as the Spouse of the Holy Spirit, and as the Handmaid of humanity.”

Mary; spouse of Holy Spirit?
Question from Rick Head on 4/7/2003:

My wife and I have been on a journey over the past 4 years into the Catholic Church. We will officially be Catholics this Easter!!! I was a Pentecostal Protestant Minister for 4 years, but I have gradually been drawn to Catholic Faith. In this journey, we have had no problems with the teachings of the Church. As for doctrine concerning Mary, however we have a question. We have no problems with the teachings on Mary as our Mother/ Queen of Heaven/ Immaculate Conception/ or Assumption. However, we have been doing lots of reading and we have learned that the Church sees Mary as the spouse of the Holy Spirit and that the Holy Spirt gives graces only through Mary. This is too difficult for us right now. I quote Mark Miravalle in "Introduction to Mary- the Heart of Marion Doctrine and Devotion". On pgs 167-168 he states, "Mary's profound union with the Holy Spirit, the Sanctifier, leads to her role as Mediatrix of every grace bestowed to the human family....As Maximilian Kolbe describes: The union between the Immaculata and the Holy Spirit is so inexpressible, yet so perfect, that the Holy Spirit acts only by the Most Blessed Virgin, His spouse. This is why she is Medatrix of all the graces given by the Holy Spirit." I have been reading the Church Fathers and Scripture, and this teaching does not seem to be reflected in these. Please help us. Is this something we must accept or is this an extemist view of Mary's role that the Church allows in the interest of Christian Liberty. Thanks Rick Head

Answer by Fr. John Echert on 5/23/2003:
Some mysteries are so profound, that they can only be fully revealed and disclosed over time. Hence, it is no surprise that the fullness of some truths is not explicitly expressed by the Sacred Scriptures or the early Fathers, though typically there is a basis. Without doubt, Saint Luke provides us with the basis for Mary as the Spouse of the Holy Spirit, in his beautiful account of the Annunciation and the circumstances of the Conception by the power of the Holy Spirit. It follows from this that, in a mystical and spiritual sense, the Holy Spirit is the Spouse of the Blessed Mother. Mary, in fact, has a special relationship with each Person of the Holy Trinity: The perfect Daughter of our heavenly Father, the Mother of the Son of God, and the Spouse of the Holy Spirit.
I welcome you to the Catholic Church, but now feel that you must make an act of Faith on this matter, and the grace of God will do the rest. Time to set down any intellectual barriers or biases you may still carry with you from your past. I guarantee you that if you open yourself up to God and pray to the Blessed Mother on this matter, you will be quickly brought to an acceptance of this mystery. ©
Thanks, Rick

Mary — a Sign
Because of Mary’s role in the life of Jesus, she receives the extraordinary gifts of freedom from sin, virginal motherhood, and union of her body and soul in heaven. These gifts are special signs that the providential love of the Father, the incarnate grace of Jesus Christ, and the outpoured fellowship of the Holy Spirit are realities that are meant for all those called by God to be His own.

The Immaculate Conception of Mary is a sign that the Father from His providential love has chosen and elected Mary to eternal life in a greater manner than any other human creature. The Father shows through this privilege given to Mary that sin was in no way part of His original intent in creation and that His original intention will be fulfilled in heaven where eternal life will be completely free from sin, suffering, and death.
The Motherhood of Mary is a sign that the Son through His incarnate grace has given her an intimacy with His being and mission in a greater manner than to any other human being. Through this privilege given to Mary, the Son shows that He, as the man Jesus, is the original reason, purpose, and goal of creation, and we are created to grow in the likeness of Christ as well as to be redeemed by Him.
The Assumption of Mary is a sign that the Spirit in His outpoured fellowship has shared the life of the world to come with Mary in a greater manner than any with other human being. The Spirit shows through this privilege given to Mary that all things that are divided, separated, and in conflict — especially symbolized by the separation of body and soul in death — are reconciled, united, and resolved in the incomparable peace of eternal life.
Mary is not only the recipient of extraordinary gifts from the Trinity; she is also a giver of extraordinary gifts from them. There is no greater love after the Father’s providential love than Mary’s loving nurture of those called to be His adopted children. There is no greater grace after the Son’s incarnate grace than Mary’s gift of herself to those called to be the brothers and sisters of Jesus. There is no greater fellowship after the Spirit’s outpoured fellowship than Mary sharing her life and the riches of divine life intimately with those who are called to be friends and even “spouses” of the Spirit.

Mary — “The excellent masterpiece of the Most High”
This explanation of the Trinity’s relationship with Mary through the use of the verse from Second Corinthians dovetails with the explanation that Saint Louis de Montfort, a great apostle of Mary, gives of the same relationship in his True Devotion to Mary. He says Mary is “the excellent masterpiece of the Most High” since the Father imparted to Mary His fruitfulness in order to enable her to bring forth His only Son into the world.

As a consequence, we may say, the Father wills that Mary be the spiritual mother who brings forth His adopted children through her nurturing influence until the end of time. She is “the admirable Mother of the Son”, since the Son became incarnate — was made flesh — through Mary and in Mary. As a result, the Son gives Himself to His spiritual brothers and sisters through His mother; and in a manner of speaking, through her will become incarnate for them as their Eucharistic food, and in them as an ever-greater likeness to Himself.

Finally, Mary is “the faithful spouse of the Holy Spirit” since the Spirit formed Jesus Christ within Mary’s womb, and remained with her in raising the child Jesus. It follows, then, that the Holy Spirit wills to fashion Jesus in His chosen ones and unite them to God by giving all of His gifts in and through Mary. As Saint Louis de Monfort wrote: “Mary is the sanctuary and the repose of the Holy Trinity, where God dwells more magnificently and more divinely than in any other place in the universe”. (This quote, and his titles for Mary are from “Preliminary Remarks” in True Devotion, Father Faber edition
